Frequently asked questions
How is road tax calculated in Cyprus?
It depends on when the vehicle was first registered. For vehicles from 2014 onwards, CO2 emissions in grams per kilometre decide the amount. For older vehicles it is engine size. Either way the annual amount is capped at €1,500.
Do electric cars pay road tax in Cyprus?
Fully electric vehicles with zero CO2 emissions pay no road tax. Hybrids pay in the normal way based on their own emissions figure, which is usually lower than an equivalent petrol car.
Where and how often do I renew the circulation licence?
Online with the Road Transport Department. You can renew for 12 months or for 6 months. A six-month renewal costs slightly more than half the annual amount.
What applies to an imported car?
What counts is the vehicle's date of first registration, not the date it arrived in Cyprus. A 2016 car imported this year is worked out on CO2 emissions, like any vehicle from 2014 onwards. The figures are on the foreign registration document.
