Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between gross and net salary in Cyprus?
Gross is your salary before any deduction, the figure written in your contract. Net is what actually reaches your bank account. Between the two come social insurance at 8.8%, GESY at 2.65% and income tax. Employer contributions are not taken out of your gross, the employer pays those on top.
What is deducted from a salary in Cyprus?
Three things: social insurance at 8.8% up to the insurable earnings ceiling, GESY at 2.65%, and income tax under the 2026 bands. The contributions come off before tax is worked out, which is why the tax is lower than you would expect from looking at the gross alone.
Is the 13th salary taxed?
Yes, it is taxed like any other income. A 13th salary is not a tax-free bonus; it simply splits the same annual amount into 13 parts instead of 12. Your annual tax comes out the same, only the spread across the months changes.
What is the tax-free allowance in 2026?
€22,000, up from the €19,500 that applied until 2025. Above that, tax runs in bands of 20%, 25%, 30% and 35%, with the top rate applying above €72,000.
